"Tetiyette and the Devil"
Authors use a variety of techniques to create their stories. The author of this particular story, "Tetiyette and the Devil," used techniques such as repetition and metaphors. In the beginning of the story she mentioned that Tetiyette was the "only one girl child," meaning she was the only daughter. She again mentioned towards the end of the story when her brother mentions that she is his only sister. Why would the author include that? I believe the author's target was young girls. As I read more into the story, it was clear that the story had a message for the young girls.
The author used metaphors to describe men; the goat and the pig were simple men. As for the Devil, he had been wearing nice clothing to impress Tetiyette. It seems as if Tetiyette wanted to find a suitable suitor so that she could be well take care of. This cues in the audience on the culture or customs that take place in the story.
Tetiyette's mother was skeptical of the Devil. She believed no man could be that beautiful and he must have been the devil. Her mother then tells her to prick him in his sleep with a pin to see if slime oozes out, if it did, he was surely the devil. Tetiyette did as she was told which showed how submissive she really was. When she pricked him, she found slime instead of blood. Tetiyette did not tell her mother the truth about the ooze. I believe she feared what her mother wold think or say and was too scared to stand up for herself. The Devil had noticed that about Tetiyette and took advantage of it. One night, the Devil had started to eat Tetiyette. As she cried out for help, the devil replied with "It's that she doesn't love me, Bel-air drum! It's thats she doesn't like my caresses, Bel-air drum" (Esteves and Parvavisini-gebert, 3).Why exactly was bel-air drum added? A bel-air drum is used as a fertility drum. He states that Tetiyette didn't like his caresses which the followed by "bel-air drum." I believe that signifies an abusive relationship. She had cried out for help but her parents had warned her; she didn't stand up for herself earlier. Tetiyette still cried out for help until finally her brother came to her rescue. He saves her from the Devil, which can now be seen as her abusive husband.
It was common before for parents to find a suitor for their daughter to marry. It many cases, the husband would end up abusive. The message for the young girls was to let them know that with the right help or the strength that they find in themselves, they can get themselves out.
