Let's talk about The Bahamas and their independence!

The Bahamas gained their independence on July 10, 1973. That means that the island was under British rule for 325 years. My question is: what led The Bahamas to want their independence after 325 years?

There could be many possible answers or theories to my question, but the only way to find out was by doing research. My theory is that at first it was fear. Then, they were just used to being under British control. Towards the end when they could finally self-govern, they had a taste of what it would be like to be independent.

Throughout my research, it has been difficult to find credible resources that pertained to just The Bahamas. When I finally found some, there wasn't much information that would be useful to my research. I had to expand my search to the West Indies which could be applicable to my paper.

What I need to research next is how the end of the slave trade/the end of slavery impacted the people of the Bahamas and how it correlates with their independence. As I had stated before, I believe that they were comfortable with being under British control. So after becoming free slaves, there was a fear of losing their freedom. So, why revolt and try to gain independence when they were already free?
