Introduction:

European empires all had a vision to be the greatest empire in history. In order for that vision to become a reality, they had to expand themselves; their economy needed to flourish, and they needed resources to do so. What did they do in order to expand? They traveled across oceans and came across the West Indies (hook). The empires scrambled to claim as many islands as possible; one of which was The Bahamas. The Spanish empire had first colonized The Bahamas in 1492; they stole the land of the indigenous, brought in disease, and introduced slavery. The story of the Bahamas had not ended there, it had just begun, the island was then a British settlement in the mid-seventeenth century; The Bahamas became a British colony in 1783 (bridge). After 325 years of harsh British colonization and slavery, Bahamians were given the right to self-govern themselves which led to the desire for their own identity (thesis).
